Senior drives off Virginia road, hits lawn tractor and kills man

It is about a four-hour drive southwest of McLean to Franklin County. The area in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains was recently the site of an unusual motor vehicle accident that is also undeniably a tragedy.

Virginia State Police officials say an older woman was driving her car east on Route 949 when for an unknown reason the vehicle veered off of the left side of the road. The 2004 Honda Odyssey slammed into a lawn tractor and the man operating it. He died at the scene, police said.

We do not yet know why the car went off the road, but in many similar cases distracted driving contributes to the wreck.

Of course, some observers might suspect that the driver's age was also a factor in the crash. The article on the incident did not state if the 72-year-old Roanoke resident has been cited by police.

Details of the cause of the crash might not be known for some time, but we do know that research by AAA Indicates that "seniors are safe drivers compared to other age groups." Older drivers tend to wear seat belts, are less likely to drive while impaired and typically observe speed limits and other traffic laws, AAA says.

At the same time, more than three-quarters of drivers ages 65 and above say they take more than one medication daily. Less than a third of them are aware of the potential dangers of driving while taking prescription medicines, however.

No matter what a person's age, they can be held financially responsible for the injuries they cause with reckless or negligent driving. You can speak with a McLean personal injury attorney about compensation in your situation.
