Drunk driver hit drunk driver in fatal Virginia crash

Two drunks, one collision, three people hospitalized, one dead. Those are some of the grim numbers that tell part of the story of a drunk-driving crash two years ago that ended the life of a 33-year-old Virginia woman.

We cannot hope to tell the whole story here in a blog post. We could not possibly convey the loss her family and friends feel after a wreck between two drunken drivers took her life about 200 miles south of McLean.

It was April 2015 when a 34-year-old man was intoxicated and behind the wheel of a 2004 Ford Mustang at 2:30 in the morning. He had a passenger in his Mustang; the vehicle was traveling between 61 and 70 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.

When he arrived at an intersection, he collided with a 35-year-old man's Chevrolet Malibu. The 35-year-old was also drunk, police and prosecutors said. He had failed to yield as he made a left turn.

Inside the Malibu was the 33-year-old Hampton woman. She was pronounced dead of her injuries at the scene of the crash.

According to news reports, the driver of the Malibu was recently sentenced to five years in prison. The driver of the Mustang was sentenced to seven years.

Here's what another passenger in the Malibu was sentenced to by the crash: a traumatic brain injury, nine broken ribs, a broken pelvis, a broken leg and both lungs collapsed.

Many people would argue that both drivers are getting off too lightly.

Car accident injury victims and families that lose loved ones can pursue financial punishment of drunken drivers with personal injury and wrongful death litigation. A conversation with an experienced attorney begins the process.
