Baby Boomers opting for cohabitation over remarriage

They fell in love to the sounds of Motown and Beatles, swayed to the soft music of The Carpenters at their weddings and raised their kids while listening to Cyndi Lauper, Talking Heads and Prince.

Now older and grayer, many Baby Boomers who saw their first marriages end in divorce are doing what younger generations do: skipping marriage in favor of living with their significant others.

According to data from the Pew Research Center, more Americans ages 50 and above are cohabiting rather than tying the knot in second or third marriages. Last year, about 18 million people in this country were living with an unmarried partner.

Almost 25 percent of them are people over 50, Pew Research Center says, which is a huge increase of 75 percent over the past decade. U.S. Census figures show that "gray divorce" has doubled since the 1990s.

"Baby Boomers have a higher divorce rate and there are a greater number of unmarried people in that age group" said a Pew Research analyst.

Reuters reports that factors in the rise of Boomers' cohabitation include a change in social norms and the fact that women much more economically independent today than they were years ago. As cohabitation has risen, the U.S. marriage rate has dropped since the turn of the century, going from 8.2 down to 6.9 per 1,000 in population, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows.

If you face the prospect of divorce, you can speak with an experienced family law attorney with the McLean law firm of Roeder & Cochran, PLLC.
