Virginia nonprofit's lawsuit to halt chicken slaughter dismissed

In order to drive from McLean to Machipongo, Virginia, you have to use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel. The 20-mile journey includes passages over bridges, through tunnels and over islands.

Machipongo is the home of nonprofit organization United Poultry Concerns. The group recently had its lawsuit against a California synagogue dismissed. The synagogue practices a ritual slaughter of chickens known as kapparot or kaporos.

A federal judge ruled that the synagogue doesn’t engage in unfair business practices by charging a $27 fee for performing kapparot. The ritual observed by some Orthodox Judaism sects involves the swinging of a chicken over your head while reciting a prayer. The fowl is afterwards slaughtered.

The ritual typically precedes the Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur.

A rabbi with the synagogue said after the decision that "We hope this victory will encourage everyone to live in peace and tolerance of everyone's religious beliefs.

United Poultry Concerns' website includes essays on veganism, thinking like a chicken and animal rights.

A spokesperson for United Poultry Concerns said the group plans to appeal the decision. Two other animal rights groups are pursuing similar claims in state court, claiming that the ritual is a form of animal cruelty.
