Fairfax County high school coach killed in pedestrian accident

As many of our McLean readers know, our area's high school football community recently suffered a devastating loss. Fairfax County's James Madison High coach, Leonard A. Schultz, 52, was killed and his nephew critically injured in a crash this past weekend near a Capital Beltway interchange.

The two men were trying to secure a boat to a trailer in the “Mixing Bowl” interchange in the Springfield area. As they tried to resecure the boat, a box truck slammed into the boat and Leonard Schultz. The impact also injured his nephew, Albert Schultz, Virginia State Police said. According to the Washington Post, the truck driver has been charged with reckless driving in the pedestrian accident.

The crash was just before 4 on Saturday afternoon, police said, at the split between the Beltway and I-95.

A Leonard Schultz colleague at the high school described the coach as a "great man" who helped lead and teach young men. "Loved by everybody," Schultz was also a “wonderful husband, son and dad,” said Mark Gjormand, head baseball coach at James Madison.

Schultz considered his teams family, Gjormand said, and he always pushed players to do their very best. Schultz was also a special education teacher at the school, according to the article in the Post.

“He will be missed,” Gjormand said. "Our hearts go out to his family.”

This loss will be felt by the coach's family as well as the school and several area communities. We wish the best for all of them as they deal with this tragedy in coming days.
