Trucker cited in 7-vehicle Virginia big rig crash

It typically takes more than four and a half hours to drive from McLean to Virginia's Pulaski County. Much of the drive is on Interstate 81, the highway that was recently the site of a 7-vehicle crash that began with the reckless driving of a trucker, police said.

A 32-year-old truck driver sideswiped another 18-wheeler as both headed south in Pulaski County, Virginia State Police officials said. The impact sent the two big rigs to the left, off of the highway and into the median.

The 32-year-old's tractor-trailer came to a stop in the median, but the other big rig rolled into the northbound lanes where it slammed into five passenger vehicles. The large truck then crashed through the guardrail and went off of the highway.

The truck driver cited for reckless driving was not injured in the crash. The other trucker was also not injured, officials said.

A woman in one of the cars struck in the northbound lanes was airlifted to a Roanoke hospital for treatment of serious injuries. News reports did not include her medical status.

Two others in the passenger vehicles were treated at a nearby medical facility and released.

As those who are familiar with tractor-trailer accidents know full well, the people in those passenger vehicles were lucky to escape with their lives. In far too many cases, truck crashes result in fatalities among occupants of the much smaller, much lighter passenger vehicles.

Those who are harmed in truck accidents -- and those who lose loved ones in commercial rig crashes -- can pursue maximum compensation for all damages. In some cases, pursuit of justice will include litigation involving the truck driver and his or her employer.

In all cases, you should be represented by an attorney experienced in personal injury and wrongful death litigation.
