Virginia truck crash: only one driver beat the odds

If you drive south of McLean for about two hours, you will arrive in Hanover, Virginia. Of course, it is possible to make the 95-mile drive in less time if you ignore speed limits and caution.

A 25-year-old driver appears to have taken the reckless approach to driving. She beat the odds in her passenger car and survived a crash with a tractor-trailer, but the truck driver was not nearly as fortunate.

The 63-year-old Pennsylvania man was hauling large rolls of plastic on Interstate 295 in Hanover County when his 18-wheeler was struck by the 25-year-old's Hyundai Sonata.

The collision sent both vehicles off the highway and into nearby trees. The truck driver did not survive the violent crash.

The younger driver was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening. Law enforcement officials told a Richmond TV news reporter that the woman has been charged with the following:

  • Reckless driving
  • Driving too fast for highway and traffic conditions
  • Driving without a valid operator's license

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says that in 2015 (the most recent year for which data is available), there were 4,311 large trucks and buses in fatal crashes. In all those crashes, only 667 truck occupants were killed (89 percent of those fatalities were drivers; 11 percent were passengers in the trucks).

While traffic safety statistics and odds are interesting, when a negligent or reckless driver harms you or a loved one, the numbers don't matter.

To pursue both justice and compensation, speak to an attorney experienced in personal injury and wrongful death litigation.
