Regular readers of our McLean Law Blog will recall that we recently shared the concerns of Virginia law enforcement officials over Thanksgiving driving safety. Their concerns were clearly well founded. According to news reports, 12 people were killed over the Thanksgiving holiday in motor vehicle crashes on Virginia highways.

Virginia State Police said a police officer was killed in a single-vehicle crash, as well as seven other drivers, two passengers in vehicles and one motorcyclist.

This year's Thanksgiving traffic toll is marginally better than last year's when 14 were killed, law enforcement officials said.

A Virginia State Police spokesperson said officers wrote nearly 600 citations for seat belt violations and nearly 200 more for failure to properly secure kids in child safety seats. The largest violation category was for speeding and reckless driving: about 9,000 tickets were written across the state.

Officials said another 102 people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Virginia over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Maryland State Police said there were four fatal traffic crashes in the state over the same period, including an apparent road rage wreck that resulted in the death of a 6-year-old boy. The child was riding in a pick-up truck that went off a highway and slammed into a tree on Thanksgiving night.

Witnesses said the truck and two other vehicles appeared to be in a high-speed road rage confrontation before the fatal crash. State police are investigating possible drug and alcohol use by one or more of the drivers.

Motorists who suffer injuries or lose a loved one in a crash caused by an impaired or otherwise negligent driver can fight for justice with the help of a lawyer experienced in personal injury litigation.
